History of Laos The recorded history of Laos goes back to the 9th century. Laos was ruled by a long line of kings. They governed the country by absolute monarchy. From the 17th century to 1955, Laos was ruled by Thailand. Finally, in 1955, Laos became an independent country again. It was ruled by a king and a democratically elected government. In 1975, The communists took control of the government and have ruled the country ever since.
TOURISM About 60000 people visit Laos every year. They are mainly backpackers travelling down the Mekong river by boat from Thailand. Laotion people earn extra money from selling their craft to tourists.
RELIGON OF LAOS Theravada Buddhism came to Laos in the 8th century. By the end of the 13th century Buddhism was the doniment religion in Laos. In fact, all the Laotion kings were Buddhist. From 1975 to 1979 Buddhism went into decline under the rule of the Communists. However, today Buddhism is still one of the most powerful social forces in Laos. Over 67% of people in Laos declare themselves as Buddhists.
PEOPLE The Laotians are descended from Tai peoples who came from what is now southern China and northern Vietnam. This migration began approximately three thousand years ago, and many descendents of theTai people remain in the country to this day. Most Laotions live in the country or rural area. Although there are many different ethnic groups in laos, they all speak the official language which is 'LAO'. Even though there are many different dielects everyone can be understood..
LAND MARKS PhaThat Luang is It is generally regarded as the most important national monument in Laos and a national symbol.. It is a large gold-covered Buddhist stupa located in the city of Vientiane. Since its initial establishment suggested to be in the 3rd century, the stupa has undergone several reconstructions. Today it is the most visited building in Laos by both Laotions and tourists,
SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT Laos has a communist state as the system of government. Laos ia a republic so it is not a commonwealth country and the queen of England does not rule. Since 1975, the Lao PDR is a single-party socialist republic, largely inspired by Vietnam, replacing the former constitutional monarchy. The royal family of Laos no longer has any role in government. There are also no multi party democratic elections in Laos,
